Social Life in Lancaster

I'm studying my foundation year right now. And so my classmate are all from different non-english speaking country where 80% of them come from China and HK :)

Well, the foundation year students this year are being divided into groups consist of 19-20 people (just like class). And I get into Group A.

Group A. there are 19 people in this group.12 of them are from China & Hong Kong. 10 boys and 9 girls. From 9 girls. Only me and a vietnamese girl who don't dome from China & HK. The other 7 girls? Ya, all of them come from China & HK and always talk in a language that I don't understand. :p The boys? hmm there's a boy from Bahrain, Malaysia, India, and 2 from Russia. And the other 5? yes they're all from China or HK. So, you can imagine at class they almost always speak in chinese with their friends. :s

Well the funny thing is, when I first arrive in here, I have no friends at all. My flatmates are mostly British people and they directly go to the university, not like me. So it's hard for me to find a friend especially we haven't started the course at that time.

Just so you know, there are a lot of chinese people. You can meet them everywhere. It's not that I don't want to be or I can't be their friends. It's just they don't really want to be a friend who can't speak in chinese like me. When I meet them on the street, they'll come to me to ask about something in chinese, and when I said "I'm not chinese" they'll just go aways without saying a word :s

It's true and it doesn't happen only once. Almost all people think I come from China, or Hong Kong. And they'll greet me in chinese, and when I didn't understand and answer in english. They'll go away just like that. Especially during the freshers week. In one day about 5 or 6 chinese come to me, then go away just like that.

Back to my story about friend. Luckily, on Sunday, (I arrive on Saturday) a girl next to my door just arrive from Vietnam, and she's in the same course as mine. Business & Management Foundation year. She's my first and only friend for about 3-4 days, and she hasn't had any friend as well at that time, lol! Oh ya, her name is Trang :)

And one day during freshers, me & Trang go to the bank together to make a bank account. In the queue, a girl in front of us ask me (in chinese) "ni shi zhong guo ren ma?" and so I said "no I'm not chinese"
She replied "where do you come from?" I answered "Indonesia"
And that girl answered happily "aku dari indo juga!" (I'm from Indonesia too)

Lol I met the one and only indonesian girl in this foundation year randomly at the bank. I never thought there will be another Indonesian in Lancaster so I never even hope to meet them. And hoila! I met her randomly at the bank. lol :) So 3 of us become good friends. We cook dinner together and do groceries together as well every Sat. Oh ya, the Indonesian girl's name is Chery :)

But three of us are divided into different groups, so at class. I become friend with the other chinese girl. They're nice :) the boys are nice as well. My group is quite exciting.

Me, Trang, and Chery

We have 3 subjects this term. FES1 (english), math, and business studies 1. The subjects are not really difficult and we only study for 15 hours in a week. So I hope I can do well in this foundation year. So I can be accepted in LUMS :)

Cheers from Lancaster,

Jeslyne =)
